Portions of Dewees Road will be closed to traffic for the platform widening project
MADISON CO., Mississippi (WLBT) – Starting next week, residents who live along Dewees Road in Madison County may need to find an alternate route to and from their homes.
Pending weather conditions, construction is scheduled to begin Monday for a $ 300,000 project to widen the street platform.
The work will take approximately 60 days. Drivers will need to find alternate routes to work as portions of the road will be closed to accommodate contractors, Madison County Engineer Tim Bryan said.
“It’s going to be totally closed,” he said. “They are going to work on both sides of the road. They will need the whole area to work.
Access to the various neighborhoods along Dewees will not be blocked and the county will provide a traffic plan to educate motorists on the best ways to get around.
“If you live in Ridgefield, next week you will need to access your neighborhood from Gluckstadt Road. If you live in Saddlebrook, you will need to access it from Stribling Road, ”he said.
During the first phase of work, a section of the Dewees between Fieldstone Lane and Saddlebrook Cove will be closed to traffic.
Bryan said he has contacted leaders of homeowners associations to inform them of plans to close the roads.
The project is necessary so that the teams can come and repav the road and widen it from 20 to 22 feet.
“Dewees started out as a farm road for the Dewees family to get to their property. The county took it over and it was a gravel road and we layered over the gravel road, ”he said. “The surfacing has two 10-foot lanes with no shoulders, no road-sized ditches.”
“The initial work will re-level the ditches and widen the platform, so the next paving contractor can come in and widen the road two feet and do a full overlay of everything, so we’ll have two 11 foot lanes. with stripes and pavement markers, “said Bryan.” It will make it look a lot nicer. ”
