Lubber Run Community Center and Jefferson Middle School Receive Best ENR Project Awards
The annual ENR awards program is dedicated to honoring the best construction projects and the companies who designed and built them. Independent juries of design and construction professionals from each of the ten regional editions of ENR evaluated the projects on the basis of innovation, teamwork and safety.
The Lubber Run Community Center, located at Arlington, Virginia, received the award for best project in the Sports / Entertainment category. The state-of-the-art facility includes new outdoor recreation spaces and offers the community programming for all ages, including a preschool and senior center. Designed and built with plenty of community input, the structure blends in perfectly with the surrounding landscape and maximizes open community space. This Net Zero Ready facility is packed with long-lasting features that optimize the building’s energy performance – even trees felled during construction have been milled and used to line main traffic routes inside the building.
Jefferson Middle School Academy, located at Washington DC, is a winner of the Merit Award for the Education K-12 category of the ENR. Located adjacent to The Wharf, this modernization has created educational environments that support 21st century learning, also serving as community spaces for the neighborhood. The school is located in a historic building originally designed for two separate entities – the Southwest Branch Public Library and Jefferson High School. MCN worked closely with the United States Commission on Fine Arts and the Historic Preservation Office throughout this project. The modernization was the building’s first major renovation since its original construction in 1939 and is LEED Gold certified.
“The 2021 MidAtlantic ENR Best Project Award is a prestigious honor recognizing the best in innovation, quality and safety. The judges reviewed nearly 90 projects located across the region, including Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Colombia, to make their selection. Being recognized brings MCN closer to achieving our vision of being the most respected builder in the MidAtlantic region, ”said MCN Build CEO, Rudy Seikaly.
