KSL Sports – Real Salt Lake

SALT LAKE CITY –Real Salt Lake will travel to Seattle for a blockbuster matchup against the Seattle Sounders in a game that has been defined as a “six-point” game, according to winger Justin Meram.

RSL come into the game having recently lost to LAFC 4-1 at Rio Tinto Stadium last weekend. The defeat was only the second home loss this season. However, despite RSL’s recent run of poor results, the club remain calm and confident going into this weekend’s deal.

Mastroeni told KSL Sports after the team’s training session on Friday that the team had had a great week of training and remained confident despite a series of poor results.

As the season enters the home stretch, RSL and Seattle Sounders are battling for playoff position. RSL currently sits in fifth in the Western Conference, while Seattle is one spot up in the playoffs in ninth. However, only two points separate Real Salt Lake and the Sounders.

Recently, Real Salt Lake conceded several goals due to lack of concentration, much to the team’s frustration. Communication has been the focus this week throughout training sessions as RSL try to battle a string of disappointing results.

Earlier this season, Real Salt Lake beat Seattle 1-0 after a 46th-minute goal from Bobby Wood to collect all three points. This weekend will be an opportunity for Seattle to take revenge and even the slate against RSL in 2022.

An emotional encounter

A lot can be assumed ahead of this weekend’s game. Last year, RSL knocked Seattle out of the playoffs in a penalty shootout in the first round of the MLS playoffs. Earlier in the 2021 season, manager Freddy Juarez left his role as RSL manager to take up an assistant coaching job at Seattle. Then, after the end of last season, 2021 RSL captain Albert Rusnák joined the Sounders after failing to agree with the RSL. Kelyn Rowe, who spent the 2019 season with RSL, also calls Seattle home.

Sounders general manager Garth Lagerway and football operations manager Craig Waibel have previously spent their time in Utah as Real Salt Lake general manager.

However, RSL attempts to take one of the added variables out of the equation and just focus on themselves.
