Jyväskylä got a new landmark from local logs – the sustainably built sauna restaurant, located by a lake and close to the city center, represents an interesting new architecture

“In the future, Jyväskylä will be defined by Sataman Viilu. We wanted the building by the lake to have a unique and impressive shape, and I think the young architects achieved this, offering something new and original,” says Antti Määtta, CEO of Osuuskauppa Keskimaa. The log restaurant and sauna will be open to the public on Thursday, June 2.

Sataman Viilu is designed by Marko Simsio and Johannes Koskela by KOAN Architecture. All log structures are designed, delivered and built by Honkarakenne. Sataman Viilu, commissioned by Osuuskauppa Keskimaa, houses a restaurant, three public saunas and adaptable facilities for events and conferences.

Take responsibility for the local environment, entrepreneurship and well-being

“We and Honkarakenne are excited to do something unique and important here,” says Antti Määttä from Osuuskauppa Keskimaa. “Honka is not only one of Finland’s most experienced timber construction companies, but also an operator based in Central Finland, which makes it a natural partner for us.”

The trees grew in certified Finnish forests and the logs were transported to Jyväskylä from the Honkarakenne factory in Karstula, located less than 100 kilometers from the site. Due to Honka’s involvement, the project was participated by local operators, such as Jyväskylä-based construction company Rakennusliike Alonen Oy as the main contractor. Viilu has been awarded the Green Key eco-label and the restaurant uses ingredients sourced from local producers.

The project budget amounted to more than 5.5 million euros. “Viilu is a testament to the fact that such elegant and varied buildings can also be built on a strict budget,” says Marko Saarelainen, CEO of Honkarakenne. “It shows the future direction of sustainable construction. A sustainable and healthy log building functions as a carbon reservoir. The material significantly reduces climate impact during construction and use. I think it’s also important for local residents and Viilu’s customers,” continues Saarelainen.

Honka was also involved in the construction of the Kuopion Saana holiday complex, which opened in 2019, as well as the unique Café Birgitta located in Hernesaari, Helsinki.

Viilu is recognizable from afar

The varied architecture of the building looks different from different directions. The prominent roof forms a point pointing towards the lake. “Outside, the building is characterized by the dark and sculptural facade, which protects the interior and the warm-coloured terrace,” describes architect Marko Simsiö. The architects designed Viilu with sheltered areas on the sauna terrace and by the lake pool. They also paid special attention to providing the best views of the lake inside and ensuring that the building blended into the surrounding landscape.

“On the lake side walls and exterior end walls, the logs have been left in their natural color as a tribute to traditional Finnish log buildings and sauna culture. At Sataman Viilu, traditional, eco-friendly log meets modern design and functionality. We think the building looks great and more or less matches what we described in the original architectural concept,” continues Simsiö.

Simsiö also designed the modern Japanese-inspired log house Honka Haiku, the Honkarakenne site at this year’s housing fair held in Naantali, Finland.
